This post is a continuation, listing various hyperbole found in the Bible. Clicky here, for all my posts detailing what I’ve found.
Books to fill the world!
“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books which were written.”John 21:25
What beautiful descriptive language! Literal? I guess you could argue it could be literal, but I don’t think it was meant literally.
Walls as high as heaven?
“Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven…” Deuteronomy 1:28
The Israelites had never seen cities as large and as fortified as the ones in Canaan. Were they literally as high as the clouds? No.
Sharpshooting Lefties
“Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.” Joshua 20:16
Slingers were the snipers of the ancient world…deadly accurate. The writer is using obvious exaggeration to descriptively relate just how good they were.
One of my friends often laughs at the “world could not contain the books” statement and how pastors preach this literally.
